Dear Uncle and Great Grandmother,

I just woke up after a long nap and reached out the the bright light that does not blind for his guidance in the hours ahead. The bright light that does not blind is with me. He seemed to help me as I helped fix the ship. Well maybe he was looking out for us when that dragon dropped a big chunk of ice that didn’t make as big of a hole in the bottom of the ship as it did in the deck. I am taking a moment after meditation to write in our magic book.

Again I am thankful that the dragon wasn’t smart. He might be not at the bottom of the sea if he had found a few more chunks like that. Had he not gotten made at Oscar maybe I would not be writing this. I can swim but the water is very cold. I am not sure my magic would be enough.

With the loss of some of the crew we have pitched in more around the ship, that includes me and my magic. Some of the crew impressed that I know how to use a mage hand, very good for moving ropes and small tools. They tell me I am pretty good for someone so small. I like that.

Its nice to talk to round ears who haven’t known me for long who seem to like to listen to me. They asked me about my magic and I tell them about how I keep my armor warm in this cold with magic and I show them my “dragon breath” that really comes from my finger. That made some of them laugh in a good way I think. They have a point that my dragon breath might be more useful if it weren’t cold. I explained that my trick was to emulate great grandmother and that she was the one who brought out the other magic I know. I know other magic but the magic that comes from the light that does not blind is what I lean on most.

They asked me how a kobald came to be with my companions. I told them a lot about my last few months and a little about where I am from. The story of the founding of our clutch, or what is the round ear word, tribe, clan, they were not sure, kept them interested while I helped them with repairs. They pressed me to learn more about you great grandmother, they know you are a silver dragon about the same size as the white dragon we killed.

I think the tale of how we grew to know the bright light that does not blind interested them too. They were skeptical about our clutches knowledge of Kurltumak and Kurltumik. They thought it was funny when I told them about what we think about what Garl Glittergold. Afterwards one of them asked me about the colors of Tiamat's scales. She agreed with the blind rage of the white scales.

Hopefully some of the crew survives as we find the giants or the giants find us. TIme to go great grandmother. Some kind of excitement on deck.

Glad I am not squished...
Dear Uncle and Great Grandmother,

I for one an glad not to be squished under a dragon. Yes, I know, Peck, how did you almost get squished by a dragon? Well the bright light who does not blind surely was watching out for me.

So my story this dream begins where we met Aramil’s mate. Corin was trying to find a person with a ship and crew. He found one. Very, very neat and well kept ship. Captain is wizard and most of his crew are people trying to impress him so he will teach them magic. So out onto the salty water we go after paying the Wizard a lot of gold. I sorry I wasn’t willing to part with the pretty coins I save for you and the few coins I keep for spendy things to help. The others seemed okay with that. Still don’t understand the spendy thing.

Speaking of spendy things Oscar back from what the others call a “bender.” Not sure how that much different than how Oscar is normally. He must drink so much of what makes me spray from my tummy all of the time just to keep him stable. Otherwise he do so many things that maybe not the best idea.

But he bought a very, very interesting sword. It magical, not very, but enough to have name, “Oathbreaker.” That odd because the motif of the bright light that does not blind clearly on it. When I gave him a skin of wine I had from Miri’s uncle he let me look at it. Very, very old, not sure about some of the symbols but the sword didn’t do anything funny and tasted fine when Oscar let me examine it. Not sure if he saw me lick it. I kiss the bright light that does not blind before I give it back.

Person who sold him the sword said it tends to go away with people and then show back up after they are done needing it or something like that. The others thought the sword would be perfect because Oscar never really go away for good. Some think what will Oscar be next. How does name of “Oathbreaker” go with sword with the bright light that does not blind, does not make sense to me?! I will keep an eye out for answer to that. Oscar even asks if I want to trade but Needle is not magical and my shield I would never part with willingly. Maybe sometime.

So next day we get on ship. The fog and mist helps me almost see okay in daytime. Not hurt so much with clouds they tell Captain about me so I go around with my hood down. Most of the tall folk look at me a little strange but the ones I talk to answer my questions and I introduce myself as “Peck Silverscale, Paladin of Bahamut!” Some seemed impressed others look at each other and make chuckles but say it nice to meet me. I go see everything I can see on the ship before we leave but the deck move even before we leave.

Oscar makes a big deal about not having “booze” my new round ear word I learn and the others need to find some stuff that I guess they pretend is what in barrel Oscar drinking from. That stuff not smell good and the ship is moving so funny, soon I am not feeling so good. Not wanting to offend the very neat Captain I make it to rail before my breakfast come back up, and keep trying to come back up. Manage to make the hole to make plop in before I plop. Try to sleep but after a day and a few pointers I get what others call “sea legs.” I can smell something good to eat down in bottom of hold but at the time I wasn’t hungry.

Captain asks us to take watches at night. I am good with watching at night! But after a couple of hours I need to sleep and Varis tell me to go sleep. I did. I wake to ruckas. Oscar on watch and I think now what did he do? But the word “dragon” is going round ship. I get on deck and see big silhouette fly over. Winter dragon with white scales but at first hard to tell how big as there is so much fog and clouds. Then something big hit the ship and we knew it was a very big dragon.

Big dragon dropped a big and sharp chunk of ice onto the ship’s deck. That made me plop. I cleaned it up though. It look like it, the ice, not my plop, might even be big enough to go all the way through the ship. I am thinking that we have a smart dragon, very rare for a winter dragon. Winter dragons not known for their thinking skills. But if this one smart we in big trouble. A smart dragon keeps dropping big chunks of ice until the boat sinks. Oscar does his usual stuff and that enough to make the dragon mad. No more ice! At least not dropped by the dragon.

So I find a good place where I am not easily seen as Oscar continues to taunt the dragon in round ear. I think about teaching him a few words of dragon but think maybe it best not at that moment. I made another plop, I better see if that one still there after I write this. I might offer Oscar to teach a few choice words in dragon that will probably make a stupider dragon mad and a smarter one to make sure that Oscar is first one to get breath weapon. But Oscar did a good job. Pretty soon out of the clouds comes fangs and teeth framed with a dragon that just seemed to get bigger and bigger and bigger.

The dragon was looking to eat Oscar with his mouth. I thought for sure he be smart enough to use his breath before he got close to Oscar but no it was not. I let fly a couple of arrows and one caught him right between the scales behind his left ear. I understood what he said but is was enough of a distraction to allow Oscar to really smack him a few times really hard. That really made him mad! Then he use cold breath on both of us and Varis too. I got really cold but then asked the bright light that does not blind to warm me up as I drew Needle and my shield. It might have been a good time to test whether the shield of your scales would have helped but I was using uncle’s bow when the dragon blew at me. I know my ancestors felt very little when you were forced to kill them but the bright light that does not blind has made me strong!

As much as I am used to snow and ice back home the charge towards the dragon with Needle was very slippery. You know great grandmother I don’t think I ever saw you use your cold! It might be good for the young ones to see and know. Slippery yes but I knew where I was headed! The dragon was preoccupied with Corin and the blind rage of the white scales left me a fairly clean path to where I knew I could really do some hurt! His plopper hole was right there! I thought about trying to climb up in and do some real hurt but things never got that desperate.

I got a few good pokes in while Corin and the others kept the dragon busy. Many on the ship’s crew died when he blew again. Miri too, everyone felt the cold! Our Captain nearly died. Between Antons arrows and lightnings, Corin’s slashing with his really bright sword (I am glad I wasn’t right by him, it was a bright light that might have blinded), Miri’s big magical flying fist and fireballs from Varis the dragon got smart too late. Between a few parting arrows from Anton and I along with a couple more fireballs I found myself right under a very dead dragon falling out of the sky!

Looked for a place to get out of the way but the bright light that does not blind inspired Corin and Miri to push the dragon’s bulk off of the ship. I was sad to see him sink below the waves. Bringing him back to the people of the town would have raised their morale and their willingness to prepare for the giants. I collected some of the blood of the dragon, maybe some of Oscar’s too. He almost became another person.

I want to make my shield of your scales better with magic. Maybe I can trade some of the blood for magic? I found a couple of broken scales too. Don’t want to put them in my shield. It reminds me of home and you.

It makes me a mad to think that the dragon was in league with those giants! Traitor to all of dragon kind! Maybe a little sad too. I thought maybe if I could meet him secretly I could get him to help us against the giants if I could have freed him. How does one get so old and be so in league with giants! No, not sad, mad!

After we killed the dragon I was very happy to be alive. I tried to suggest a song to Miri, not sure if she liked it. It went like this.

We killed a dragon
We killed a dragon
Yes we did.

He was stupid!
And aggressive!
That helped us win!

Maybe I stick to sneaking and letting the bright light that does not blind guide me. The Captain is willing to help us chase the giants. May the bright light that does not blind continue to bring me courage! May the bright light that does not blind help us as we try to keep this war from destroying the world. Maybe I live to see home again. Maybe I won’t. But I hope these tall ones are learning there is more to our people that what they might think.

On to martyrdom!
Please listen tall friends. I know my voice is tiny compared to your but I think I have good things to say. While I am all for Corin’s plan for our martyrdom me thinks there may be other ways.

We kobolds face big aggressive giants all of the time. We had to handle ogres, orcs and hobgoblins from time to time, and once a troll! To my people they all giants, you point and round ears are giants too in my eyes. While Needle and me can hold our own going out where the enemy can smash you isn’t the best way to live to lay another egg. I older than you think and I lay my last egg five summers ago.

Needle and me finished off a lot of giants but not before they were bleeding, blinded or crippled from our collective efforts. Ya, I know, most Paladins of other gods are more like Corin or Oscar. No nonsense go confront the enemy. I can do that too, and will. The bright light that does not blind make me brave. He also gives me wisdom.

So finding a boat to go find a boat is a good idea I guess. Do we know where the big boat is going? Can one of you track Aramil now that we know where he is? Can we determine what way the boat go? They may be here in a matter of one night but warn people maybe we could! More than one night maybe we could have the people give the frosty giants a little one reception.

People in these town make leather right? Nasty stuff to make leather. Burns eyes right? How about stuff to make soap? Make burns without fire! Add heat and ouch! Strong thin pointy sticks can stick giant feet. A strong rope hidden can trip a giant.

Why take a boat if we can reach ship by magic? If Corin can turn me into great ancient one he could turn me into great swimming crocodile who has bigger mouth than the great ancient one. I bet with that mouth I could break ship somehow. What word? Oar? Yes, oar? Break oars make boat slower, yes? What thing at back of boat that steers? It is hard to steer big boat like that without that thing? That big boat slow with big angry slow giants! Make it slower and maybe we can not be martyrs quite yet!

I can be small too. I already small. I good at sneaking. I could be brave and tell you about boat before we attack giants. Get good surprises! Maybe leave a couple surprises! If we travel by spell don’t we need to know where to spell to?

Oh that remind me! The key to making giants slow is to make them mad. Mad giants get frustrated and make bad decisions. Easier to get things in eyes or have them not notice bad things that we put in their way. Bad to get caught by angry giants. That why it good to shoot and scoot. Do then run to next place to do more. Lead giant into giant holes with pointy sticks at bottom. People would need very big holes right for giant giants. They need time. We get them at least least time. A hobgoblin with ants stinging in pants is easier to not be killed by! What can we put in giant giant pants?

Maybe we get a dragon to help! When I connect with the great bright light that does not blind maybe I seek his help. Valoria’s children would not be too much good. Cold no effect cold! Gold dragon maybe but bronze dragon with zap zap breath maybe best. Not to get to boat but protect town from giants in boat. What you think big friends?

Going to Many Places
Dear Great Grandmother and Uncle Taggus.

I feel good about what we did in Ultek. I like how people when they saw me and didn’t look at me as funny as they did when they first saw me. I liked talking to people when I gave them coins. I pay the saw mill people coins to saw new wood and make shingles to fix roofs. I give a few coins to each mother to feed her hatchlings, er, children. The words from dragon tongue to pointy ear and round ear don’t always translate so well.

As I write this I sit waiting for Corin to try and convince sailors to help us rescue Aramil. He got caught by the giants. Don’t know how long that took but I suppose with one of them with a magic necklace that seemed to be able find him might have made that easier. He left to see the noble knight to help find his brother without talking to us too much. Miri is very sad and we met Aramil’s mate? Mate, is that right word?

We did lots of traveling without walking. I guess that is okay. I haven’t called Pretty yet. I miss Pretty. We travel by spell to circles. We go to see some of Miri’s blood kin. In a big city named Greyhawk! Uncle mention this place.

We go from the snow of Ultek to a sunny grove. We get to the grove and the light was so bright. I could not pull my hood up high enough. I was watching the tall ones feed where I usually try to look up at their faces as long as they are not too close to a bright light. Very hard to do but it was nice to be in a warm place with grass. Back to summer.

We get to Greyhawk by magic. The circle we go to is made of trees. The trees black on one side. No dragon breath I think. No feeling of bad things but I guess something bad used the circle some time not to long ago. Nothing to do something about right now. Now go into the city.

I hide under my simple robe. My shield makes me rounder than I am. Some people, mostly before they almost trip on me give me funny looks but I think I pass as a halfling, at least until I talk which I try not to do much. To go into Greyhawk we have to tie our blades so they not easy to draw. Corrin’s large pack became a problem because his big long blade stick out too much. He strong, why he carry so many things. He already walk around all clankity. That big pack has more clankity I think. He can’t walk quite. I haven’t had to walk quite yet since I met the others.

I am not sure my pointy ear friends know I understand everything they say in their language. I don’t speak it so well. Round ear easier to say words but sometimes I think my voice to high. It certainly doesn’t carry far in a noisy city.

Corin wanted to go sell things in his pack. Meri wanted to go straight to her blood kins. Varis want to go to temple. Anton want to go to his temple. Temple of Bahamut??? I don’t think anyone heard me. I couldn’t see well enough to I keep close to everyone because it so hard to see sometimes in a city on a sunny day like we visit.

We go to the temples, we go to place to buy and sell things. Corin gets a magic shield! Can I make my shield more magic? Varis stops me before I take off my robe. I guess people in Greyhawk not used to kobolds walking in the city. Never did get a straight answer on how many coins it cost to make my shield of scales more magic.

We go to place with lots of skins and reeds with words on them. It cost one hundred coins to look, or at least I think that what they say. I too worried about my feet and tail showing to much. Miri and I sit and wait while others try and find information on the ring that Aramil’s brother might have. I try and make little talk with Miri.

See if she has ever, what word, have baby? Hatchling not right. People not like dragons grow hatchlings inside themselves, or inside females. They get very big and I remember Galee, one of uncles’ daughters was growing a baby and then the baby come! She could barely walk before baby. Miri not interested.

We then go to Miri and Aramil’s blood kin. I think he a blood uncle. He invite us for a meal. Still food okay. I know it not a good idea to find something more appealing. Still food fills my belly but doesn’t always sit well. It take a while for it to sink in that wine and my belly don’t go together. Big cone of wine coming up after it goes down not a pretty thing. I drink watered down honey drink. That okay.

Miri and the others talk to uncle. Want help to find ring of winter but why not mention ring? No sense to me if you want help not to tell person what exactly you want help. Others mention many good places, or places I would like to see. Silver Dragon Inn, Gold Dragon Inn, any dragons visit there?

Then we go to see Aramil’s mate, maybe not mate. No babies. Not that I saw. But we also figure out then that Aramil is on the giant’s big boat. I watch them figure this out on a map. We travel to another city where it cold again. Very far from Greyhawk. We really travel long distances over the last weeks. All without walking except when we get to a place.

So Great Grandmother, I know you can see this writing in your dreams. Pass it on to uncle. Corin trying to find ship to go to the big boat to rescue Aramil. Seems to me that maybe not very easy. But the others plan magic to get us on board. Will I get to be big again?
