Episode 001: Keeper of Dragons
The adventurers traveled to the village of Oakhurst, a day’s ride northeast of Neverwinter. On their way, they were attacked by a pair of plant creatures called twig blights. Baltrex recalled some lore regarding these creatures (see Notes below) and shared it with his companions.

The heroes visited with a few of the locals and heard rumors of a ruined fortress deep within a large crevasse northwest of the village. They made the 2-hour journey to the chasm and descended into its depths. They found an old citadel within and began exploring the ruins. Once inside, they discovered a locked stone door with a rearing dragon carved into it. The door had a single keyhole situated in the dragon's open mouth, but they were unable to get past it.

Later, the adventurers met a kobold named Meepo, the “Keeper of Dragons”, who claimed Endret, his clan's dragon, had been stolen by goblins. When the companions hinted at finding Endret, Meepo insisted they meet his chieftain. The chieftain, a female kobold named Yusdrayl, and the adventurers negotiated a deal; the companions would retrieve the clan’s dragon and in return, the kobolds would give them a few of their “treasures” which sat upon a crumbling altar. Above the altar, the heroes noticed a carving of a rearing dragon; a metallic key held firmly in the dragon's jaws. Yusdrayl offered to have Meepo guide the party and the heroes accepted.

Persons of Interest:
  • Garon (middle-aged human male) - owner of the Ol’ Boar Inn.
  • Vurnor Leng (60ish human male) - mayor of Oakhurst.
  • Felosial (30ish female half-elf) - local constable.
  • Meepo (male kobold warrior) - “Keeper of Dragons”.
  • Yusdrayl, (female kobold) - chieftain of the Gabarang clan.

Episode Highlights:
  • Delg, Baltrex, Balamin and Nym advanced to 2nd level.
  • Baltrex “discovered” a pit trap (i.e. he fell into it) and he flew into a rage at the slightest provocation.
  • Delg nearly toppled off of a ledge and he vigorously attempted to open a sealed cask.
  • Balamin single-handedly dispatched a trio of rats.
  • Nym grunted a lot while he watched his monk companion kick butt.

  • Awakened plants gifted with the powers of intelligence and mobility. A blight carries out the will of ancient evil and attempts to spread that evil wherever it can.
  • Legends tell of a vampire named Gulthias who worked terrible magic and raised up an abominable tower called Nightfang Spire. Gulthias was undone when a hero plunged a wooden stake through his heart, but as the vampire was destroyed, his blood infused the stake with a dreadful power. Tendrils of new growth sprouted from the wood, growing into a tree infused with the vampire's evil essence. From this Gulthias tree came the seeds from which the first blights were sown.
  • Blights act under a Gulthias tree's control.

Neverwinter, Flamerule 1488 DR; the Year of Dwarvenkind Reborn.

37 years ago, the city of Nevewinter was beset by all manner of destruction. Mount Hotenow, a nearby volcano, violently erupted, and cast much of Neverwinter into ruin. Thousands were killed, and a great, gaping chasm split the city. Under the controversial leadership of Dagult Neverember, what was a blasted, wounded city just a decade ago is now an exciting, humming place. To support the city’s renewal and to maintain order, Dagult brought in mercenaries from Mintarn. The citizens of Neverwinter resented this and look forward to the day when their own protect the city again.

The heroes, Delg, Baltrex, Balamin and Nym, met in Neverwinter. All came to the city for different reasons, but each was sure that Neverwinter would provide them with opportunities not found elsewhere. They scrounged for work but the work they found proved difficult, filthy and demeaning. In the years following the eruption of Mount Hotenow, Neverwinter has been slowly reclaiming devastated sections by employing hard working folk willing to clean up the mess. The pay was enough to support a modest lifestyle but the constant ridicule from the Mintarn enforcers was humiliating. The heroes knew there had to be something better.

One evening, after a day of more jeering from off-duty Mintarn soldiers, they found themselves in their favorite establishment; the Driftwood Tavern. A renowned half-elven bard named Leararn of Highmoon was entertaining a large and raucous crowd. The heroes became engrossed with the bard’s tales and one story in particular intrigued them; the story of the Lost Citadel. Leararn told of an ancient fortress that was swallowed by the land and was uncovered following the eruption of Mount Hotenow. A few brave adventurers were rumored to have journeyed to the ruins, but none ever returned.

Following Leararn’s performance, the heroes struck up a conversation with the bard and asked him more about the mysterious citadel. The bard said that the story originated in a small village not far from Neverwinter named Oakhurst, but he knew little beyond this. An eavesdropping halfling added “I know for a fact that goblins live in the Lost Citadel and every Midsummer, they emerge with a perfect, ruby red apple that has magical properties! It heals, cures diseases and can even make one young again!” The halfling wandered off and the bard prepared for another performance.

The companions called it a night, except for Delg who wanted to hear more of Leararn’s tales before retiring. The following morning, the heroes decided to visit Oakhurst and see what truth the story of the Lost Citadel held.
