Episode 004: Dragon Doors
Campaign Date: Flamerule 30 & Midsummer Holiday 1489 DR
Adventure Date: Saturday, July 28, 2018

Episode Recap:
The heroes were unable to wake the unconscious male and female by shaking them or using magic, so they fed them the fruit from the Gulthias Tree and waited. Their efforts appeared to have no effect, so after an uneventful 8-hour rest, the companions bound the pair and set off to investigate a few unexplored areas before heading back to Oakhurst.

The adventurers came upon another stone door with a rearing dragon carved into it. This time, instead of a keyhole situated in the dragon's open mouth, the carving featured an image of a small, curled up dragon. Delg withdrew the crystal whistle they found a few days earlier and hesitantly put it to his lips. He drew in a deep breath, pushed the air through the whistle and fell to the floor coughing and retching. When the heroes turned their attention back to the door, they noticed it had disappeared! The small room beyond contained a strange, tattered Cult of the Dragon banner, a rusted statue of a five-headed dragon and a metallic cylinder with a half-dozen movable rings. The metallic cylinder and each of the rings were inscribed with dwarven runes.

Following a lengthy trek into the Underdark in pursuit of a fleeing bugbear, the adventurers returned to the druid’s cavern and discovered the young male and female were no longer there. The heroes made their way back to the first dragon door and used the key from Yusdrayl’s treasure to open it. Beyond the door they faced several traps protecting an ancient burial chamber containing a large sarcophagus adorned with dragon imagery. The companions opened the sarcophagus and defeated the dragonpriest troll entombed within while his quasit guardian disappeared and presumably fled.

Episode 003: The Gulthias Tree
Campaign Date: Flamerule 29-30, 1489 DR
Adventure Date: Saturday, July 7, 2018

Episode Recap:
As the adventurers attempted to recuperate, angry goblins and their hobgoblin superiors harassed them repeatedly. The heroes prepared themselves for a full force attack, but one never came. While exploring goblin territory, the companions battered through a door that led into the kobold chieftain’s throne room. The kobolds defended their chieftain Yusdrayl and secured her escape despite taking heavy casualties. With the kobolds defeated, the adventurers eagerly removed the large metallic key from the jaws of the rearing dragon carving!

The heroes considered their options and decided to press on through the goblin infested portion of the citadel in search of the enchanted fruit the goblins were rumored to possess. The adventurers confronted the goblin leader, a nasty hobgoblin named Durnn, and defeated him along with his entourage. Durnn’s chamber held a circular shaft that pierced the floor and from it shined dim violet light. The walls of the nearly 100’ deep shaft were coated with strange white and gray vines which provided the companions with an easy means of descent.

The adventurers discovered a huge cavern in which a grove of sickly trees grew among a ruined structure. In the distance, a blackened, twisted tree bearing a large, ruby-red apple reached upward like a skeletal hand. Standing before the tree were three figures; a young male and female whose eyes were black, and their skin was gray with the texture of bark, and a middle-aged bearded druid. The druid spoke reverently about the Gulthias Tree and he informed the heroes they would make excellent supplicants. The companions overcame the druid and his allies by destroying the Gulthias Tree with showers of radiant fire from Delg’s Sacred Flame. The enchanted fruit was harvested, and the adventurers turned their attention to the young male and female that fought beside the druid.

Episode 002: Legendary Leap
Campaign Date: Flamerule 29, 1489 DR
Adventure Date: Saturday, May 26, 2018

Episode Recap:
Meepo, the kobold Keeper of Dragons, led the heroes into goblin territory. Beyond a sealed doorway the adventurers found an obsidian altar with an image of a five-headed dragon carved into it. Atop the altar sat a burning candle and a small whistle. After defeating the sanctuary’s skeletal guardians, Baltrex gleefully destroyed the altar at Balamin’s request. Delg pocketed the whistle, even after Balamin warned him it was undoubtedly evil.

The companions battled a few small groups of goblins, the most dramatic of which involved Balamin’s 20’ leap over a caltrop filled hallway! The monk landed atop a low wall and dispatched a pair of goblins on the opposite side. The heroes found a gnome named Erky Timbers locked in a cage that was much too small, even for him. After several failed attempts to free the gnome, Nym strapped the cage to his back and Erky made the best of the bumpy ride.

Inside a grisly trophy room, the adventurers encountered a white dragon wyrmling. Meepo was overjoyed to see the creature but the wyrmling didn’t share in the kobold’s elation. The dragon exhaled a blast of frigid breath and froze the surprised Meepo solid! The companions defeated the wyrmling but decided to make camp and tend to their wounds before pressing onward

Episode 001: Keeper of Dragons
Campaign Date: Flamerule 27-29, 1489 DR
Adventure Date: Saturday, April 28, 2018

Episode Recap:
The adventurers traveled to the village of Oakhurst, a day’s ride northeast of Neverwinter. On their way, they were attacked by a pair of plant creatures called twig blights. Baltrex recalled some lore regarding these creatures (see Notes below) and shared it with his companions.

The heroes visited with a few of the locals and heard rumors of a ruined fortress deep within a large crevasse northwest of the village. They made the 2-hour journey to the chasm and descended into its depths. They found an old citadel within and began exploring the ruins. Once inside, they discovered a locked stone door with a rearing dragon carved into it. The door had a single keyhole situated in the dragon's open mouth, but they were unable to get past it.

Later, the adventurers met a kobold named Meepo, the “Keeper of Dragons”, who claimed Endret, his clan's dragon, had been stolen by goblins. When the companions hinted at finding Endret, Meepo insisted they meet his chieftain. The chieftain, a female kobold named Yusdrayl, and the adventurers negotiated a deal; the companions would retrieve the clan’s dragon and in return, the kobolds would give them a few of their “treasures” which sat upon a crumbling altar. Above the altar, the heroes noticed a carving of a rearing dragon; a metallic key held firmly in the dragon's jaws. Yusdrayl offered to have Meepo guide the party and the heroes accepted.

Episode Highlights:
  • Delg, Baltrex, Balamin and Nym advanced to 2nd level.

NPCs Introduced:
  • Garon (middle-aged human male): Owner of the Ol’ Boar Inn.
  • Vurnor Leng (60ish human male): Mayor of Oakhurst.
  • Felosial (30ish female half-elf): Oakhurst constable.
  • Meepo (male kobold warrior): The “Keeper of Dragons”.
  • Yusdrayl, (female kobold): Chieftain of the Gabarang clan.

PC Notes:
Blights
  • Awakened plants gifted with the powers of intelligence and mobility. A blight carries out the will of ancient evil and attempts to spread that evil wherever it can.
  • Legends tell of a vampire named Gulthias who worked terrible magic and raised up an abominable tower called Nightfang Spire. Gulthias was undone when a hero plunged a wooden stake through his heart, but as the vampire was destroyed, his blood infused the stake with a dreadful power. Tendrils of new growth sprouted from the wood, growing into a tree infused with the vampire's evil essence. From this Gulthias tree came the seeds from which the first blights were sown.
  • Blights act under a Gulthias tree's control.

Prologue
Neverwinter, Flamerule 1489 DR; the Year of Dwarvenkind Reborn.

38 years ago, the city of Nevewinter was beset by all manner of destruction. Mount Hotenow, a nearby volcano, violently erupted, and cast much of Neverwinter into ruin. Thousands were killed, and a great, gaping chasm split the city. Under the controversial leadership of Dagult Neverember, what was a blasted, wounded city just a decade ago is now an exciting, humming place. To support the city’s renewal and to maintain order, Dagult brought in mercenaries from Mintarn. The citizens of Neverwinter resented this and look forward to the day when their own protect the city again.

The heroes, Delg, Baltrex, Balamin and Nym, met in Neverwinter. All came to the city for different reasons, but each was sure that Neverwinter would provide them with opportunities not found elsewhere. They scrounged for work but the work they found proved difficult, filthy and demeaning. In the years following the eruption of Mount Hotenow, Neverwinter has been slowly reclaiming devastated sections by employing hard working folk willing to clean up the mess. The pay was enough to support a modest lifestyle but the constant ridicule from the Mintarn enforcers was humiliating. The heroes knew there had to be something better.

One evening, after a day of more jeering from off-duty Mintarn soldiers, they found themselves in their favorite establishment; the Driftwood Tavern. A renowned half-elven bard named Leararn of Highmoon was entertaining a large and raucous crowd. The heroes became engrossed with the bard’s tales and one story in particular intrigued them; the story of the Lost Citadel. Leararn told of an ancient fortress that was swallowed by the land and was uncovered following the eruption of Mount Hotenow. A few brave adventurers were rumored to have journeyed to the ruins, but none ever returned.

Following Leararn’s performance, the heroes struck up a conversation with the bard and asked him more about the mysterious citadel. The bard said that the story originated in a small village not far from Neverwinter named Oakhurst, but he knew little beyond this. An eavesdropping halfling added “I know for a fact that goblins live in the Lost Citadel and every Midsummer, they emerge with a perfect, ruby red apple that has magical properties! It heals, cures diseases and can even make one young again!” The halfling wandered off and the bard prepared for another performance.

The companions called it a night, except for Delg who wanted to hear more of Leararn’s tales before retiring. The following morning, the heroes decided to visit Oakhurst and see what truth the story of the Lost Citadel held.
