"I don’t think about my childhood much anymore. I was born at a coastal port city along the Vilayet Sea. My father was a trader though he was not a very prosperous one. He was small-minded. I saw the exotic goods brought in from far-away lands and new that real prosperity required some leg-work. The first chance I got, I stowed away on a trading vessel heading up the coast. I was caught stealing a rather large ruby from the captain’s chambers. I had two choices: either he’d remove my hand or I’d work for him. As you can see, I chose the latter for which I have no regrets. My line of work requires some dexterity. It’s good that I did because I learned a great deal from that man. He was a skilled bargainer, far more so than my father. I apprenticed with him for a few years until he met an unfortunate end when a trade deal went incredibly poorly. Luckily I was left with the goods and I couldn’t let them go to waste. I traveled all over Turan and as far as Zamora. I’ve seen palaces and jungles and all manner of people. I won’t bore you with every adventure. Suffice it to say I learned the languages and customs of the land as I found it easier to trade with those who were comfortable with me. I even picked up a little of the Corinthian dialect in my journeys. A pleasant merchant bearing exotic gifts is often overlooked - which allows me to acquire certain goods. What, steal? No, no, no. Let’s stick with “acquire.” But I digress, you know all there is to know about Shen. Now, can I interest you in this jewel-inlaid oil lamp. Only one like it anywhere in the world..."
