Recover Malick's Gem (Completed)Given by: MalickLocation: DarromarReward: "more than the gem is worth"Completion Conditions: return the gemAssigned to:
Leokas Dusktracker
DescriptionLeokas heeded a summon by Malick for bounty hunters to apprehend a hobgoblin thief who broke into his house and stole a palm-sized green star sapphire from his collection on the night of New Year's Eve (Nightal 30, 1371 DR). Malick promises to pay "more than the gem is worth" to the first adventurer to return the gem to him. The gem has unique runic characters on each face.
The hobgoblin was found dead in the town of Baradin's Hill, assassinated by the mysterious woman Vashti. Vashti has the gem, but claims it is not a star sapphire at all.
The party negotiated an arrangement with her where all of them would travel to the town of Copper Hill as a first step in determining who hired the hobgoblin to steal the gem in the first place.
It has been learned from Lady Frost that the gem is an Omlar gem with symbols relating to the element of fire and several dwarven runes.
How Malick came to find the gem, why he lied about it, and why a hobgoblin stole it are now key questions driving the party's quest.

DescriptionMalick claims the gem was his and lied about what it is to Leokas. Jayce told Vashti that the gem was stolen from his family. The hobgoblin clearly traveled a long distance to steal the gem from Malick.
What is so important about this gem?
The following things have been learned about the gem:- Lady Frost had informed Leokas that the runes on the square faces of the gem were Dethek runes, the alphabet of the Dwarves. Moreover, the triangular faces were covered in symbols of elemental fire, implying perhaps a Dwarven origin and a magical purpose related to fire.
- Omlar gems are also known to be used in the minaret towers along the Trade Way, but it is not clear if this is of any relation to the specific gem the party is carrying.
- The runes on the square faces can be used to spell the name "Samber".
- Magical identification revealed that the gem is a portal key.
- Malick admitted that he stole the gem from the efreeti Allu, who had appeared on an island upon which he had been shipwrecked with hobgoblin pirates.

DescriptionThe hobgoblin who stole Malick's Omlar gem traveled many miles over many days to steal it. What was the hobgoblin's purpose? Where was he from? Who sent him, if anyone? And why was he also carrying an efreeti bottle?
It seems the hobgoblin was following a efreeti, named Allu, who is claiming to be a new god of hobgoblins. The purposes of Allu, however, remain unknown, particularly his desire for the Omlar gem.-

DescriptionVashti left a potential genie bottle with the party as a pledge that she would return to meet with them to discuss Malick's gem.
Vashti kept her promise and returned, and she traded back Malick's gem for the bottle.
The party has learned that the bottle is likely an efreeti bottle.
The party also learned that Vashti found the bottle on the body of the hobgoblin.
In the belly of a slain wyrmling brown dragon, the party found an identical bottle.
Both the wizard Oadif and the dragon Sseth had doubts that the bottles were actual efreeti bottles, as neither bottle was continuously smoking.
In the presence of Sseth, the party opened one of the bottles. This act seemed to summon an efreeti, who had expected one of his hobgoblin servants. The efreeti was recognized as the fake god Allu. The dragon put the efreeti into a deep sleep with his dragon breath; however, the efreeti was returned from whence he came by the magic of the bottle, which then vanished.
The second bottle was given to Sseth for safe-keeping. -

DescriptionA pair of hobgoblins successfully infiltrated the goblinoid slave pens in Keltar at the start of the second tenday of the month of Hammer and released all of the goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears into the streets of Sabban Southeast. The two hobgoblins are reported to have been well-equipped and highly skilled. Both are still at-large. Vashti has suspicions that there may be a connection between these two hobgoblins and the one she earlier killed who had stolen the Omlar gem.
Shyk Xaros Tenseal informed the adventurers that most of the goblins and bugbears had been rounded up, but the majority of the hobgoblins — not just the two — were still missing. It is thought that they have fled into the desert. The amlakkar do not have the resources to pursue them, nor does he believe that they could survive for long in the magical sands, but Xaros has offered a reward if the slaves can be tracked and returned and the two hobgoblins killed.
After initially finding the tracks of a large group of hobgoblins leading into the desert, Leokas lost all sign of them, due to the shifting sands. However, they soon met a brass dragon, Sseth, who claimed to have spotted 15 to 20 hobgoblins that had passed west of the Trade Way. Sseth agreed to find them again if the party would recover an ancient object of historical importance for his museum from the Harem Palace of Calim.
Within the Harem Palace, the adventurers encountered a bugbear, Rhok, who claimed to have travel with the hobgoblins and then been abandoned by them. According to Rhok, Gnish was killed by a brown dragon in the desert, leaving Barlock to lead the group of escaped slaves.
The hobgoblins appear to have successfully reached their destination at a "secret palace" of the "god" Allu.
Sseth later spotted a band of five hobgoblins heading north in the desert toward Dashadjen. He captured one and brought him to the party. Upon interrogation, he revealed that one of his companions was Barlock, and they had been sent to investigate the mummified priestess of Akadi, El Sadhara. Rumors stated that El Sadhara was Calim's lover. Allu wanted to ensure that no real djinni was a threat to his plans.
Within the Altar of the Air, El Sadhara's abode, the adventurers confronted the four hobgoblins. One of them, presumably Barlock, drank a magic potion and vanished, and the party defeated the remaining three.
Barlock was finally spotted again in the inner sanctum of El Sadhara, when he destroyed the statue of Calim that she had been preparing. In response, she destroyed him utterly with her magic.-

DescriptionThe brass dragon Sseth has made an arrangement with the adventurers for them to descend into one of the ruined towers of the famous Harem Palace of Teshyll in hopes of finding a well-preserved relic of life from the pre-1st Age of Calimshan. While they are there, he will watch over Kamil. If they return with something worthwhile to him, he has agreed to fly out over the desert landscape to search out the remaining hobgoblins, which he had seen cross the Trade Way two days prior, heading west.
The adventurers descended deep into the ruins of the Harem Palace. While there, they encountered the ghost of one of the concubines. While at first terrified by her deathly moans, they eventually gathered courage to converse with her. She seemed to believe she was still alive and living in a fully functioning palace. After she left them temporarily for "two hours of perfume treatments", they discovered what must have been the remains of her bedroom, where they found her magically preserved diary within an earthen vessel.
They delivered this book to Sseth, who was ecstatic at their find. As promised, he set out on the wing to find the hobgoblins. He agreed to meet them later at a human monastery 20 miles west by north from Teshyll with the results of his search.

DescriptionMalick described being shipwrecked on an island, perhaps near the Nelanther Isles, that was "unusually cold". It was here that the efreeti Allu gathered his following of hobgoblins. How did Allu arrive at this island? To answer this question, the party must first find it.
Belvin has had several visions, both while in trance and while awake, about a "white" island to the west.
The party discovered that the island on which they shipwrecked while pursuing Samber was the island from which Allu had first emerged. They encountered the remaining hobgoblins from the tribe to which Allu first appeared as their god. These remaining hobgoblins refused to worship him.

DescriptionWhy did Malick lie about the Omlar gem? Is the gem really his to begin with? Return to Darromar and talk to Malick.
The party conversed with Malick and found him quite willing to share information. They learned the story of how he obtained the Omlar gem from the efreeti Allu. His only reason for lying about the gem was to avoid becoming a target of thieves.
Soon after meeting with Malick, the young wizard was murdered by further hobgoblins sent from Allu. -

DescriptionIn the living chambers of El Sadhara, the party unexpectedly discovered a journal of one Samber, a magician of some sort. Samber wrote his name on the front of his journal in Dethek runes — the same runes found on the square faces of the Omlar gem!
A further discovery is that the mysterious packages they are currently guarding, being delivered by Walker, are being sent to a man named Samber.
Who is Samber? What is his connection to El Sadhara, Allu, Malick, or Walker? (Malick claimed to have never heard of Samber.)
The party at last came to Samber's island. They have concluded that he is a powerful magic user of some sort who has created numerous creatures living on the island, from golems to strange animals to even sentient humanoid beings who are known as Forokell. The Forokell call Samber "the Maker".
When the party at last came to Samber's underground dome, where his palace was hidden, they faced him at night at the gazebo within his garden. Samber exiled them through a magical portal to somewhere far to the north in a land of snow and ice. Just before this happened, Leokas told him that his works must be stopped, that the gods demanded it.

DescriptionWhile the party knows the primary purpose of the Omlar gem is to serve as a portal key, they do not know the location of this portal. One theory is that it is the portal through which Allu entered the Material Plane, perhaps on the same island where Malick was shipwrecked. Some of the group think that it may be possible to find the portal and trick Allu into entering through it without the gem, perhaps trapping him back in his original plane.
They have ruled out that the Omlar gem was required to pass from the ziggurat to Ubtao in the jungles of Chult to Samber's warehouse in Shilku.
- Lady Frost had informed Leokas that the runes on the square faces of the gem were Dethek runes, the alphabet of the Dwarves. Moreover, the triangular faces were covered in symbols of elemental fire, implying perhaps a Dwarven origin and a magical purpose related to fire.

DescriptionAfter passing under and through the Marching Mountains and into Calimshan via the goblin tunnel, Belvin and Leokas were escorted by armed soldiers to the warcamp of Captain Grim of the Janessar. After apologizing for their arrest, Grim said that they were free to go, yet he offered them the opportunity to assist in an ambush against a party of Calishite slavers said by his scouts to be coming up a nearby road. The ambush is to be led by newly promoted Lieutenant Rein. Grim is somewhat concerned, as it is the first command for the young lad.
For their assistance, he offers them two Lantanese muskets and an even share in any loot the slavers may have, which likely includes a horse.
The slaves were freed, and Grim rewarded the two elves as promised. -

DescriptionMerely a couple hours after joining with the party of elves, Vashti was slain in battle when they were ambushed by six goblins on the road to Copper Hill. The group rushes to Copper Hill, hoping to find a spellcaster powerful enough to raise her from the dead before her soul leaves the fugue plane forever.
The town of Copper Hill contained the Temple of Justice, a temple to Anachtyr. On the temple grounds was a library of sacred scrolls in scroll cases magically sealed. The adept Brother Babar yn Amun el Ilmater offered to attempt to cast a spell to raise the dead if the party could find the 6,125 gold pieces required to unseal the scroll.
At a mages' enclave, the party learned that the co-leader of the group of elementalist spellcasters, one "Lady Frost", was friends with Vashti, who "is like a daughter" to her. Lady Frost sold two expensive magical items at the bazaar, worth about 4,000 gold. The party bartered away their two horses and the firearms they had obtained from the Janessar to raise the remaining funds.
Later that evening, Brother Babar, with Belvin praying for guidance, read the words on sacred scroll and successfully raised Vashti from the dead. -

DescriptionIt has been discovered that someone intended to capture Kyrin Hawkwinter, the countess of Calimmon county. This character somehow disguised him/her/itself as a gnoll and arranged for the capture of the countess' fiancé over a year ago and for her own capture more recently. Fortunately for Kyrin and unfortunately for Rhinda, the two women were confused, and the latter was captured.
Who is this suspicious character and what are his/her/its goals?
Any news of further conspiracy in Calimmon should also be reported to the countess.
The party discovered proof that doppelgangers were involved. Kyrin was able to pass this information on to her superiors, who began to unravel the conspiracy further.
In the end, it was found that the Duke of Kamlann, Lord Inselm Hhune, for years had been seeking to overturn the new queen's power. In addition to several other plots, he had been hoping to have a doppelganger replace Kyrin as Countess of Calimmon. This would allow him to control that border county, permitting him to receive troops from Calimshan for a potential coup against the queen.
The Duke was publicly exposed and Kyrin's wedding and taken into custody for a trial at a later date.
The party was able to determine that the suspicious "imposter" had been writing in the language of doppelgangers, a race of shapeshifters.-

DescriptionThe morning after arriving at the Daraqadim, the paladin Rhinda left the party alone early in the morning. Sir Gamalon, highly concerned, set out to attempt to overtake her, and Belvin and Leokas agreed to join him, both of them renting horses from the countess.
They made it as far as Myratma with no sign of Rhinda on the road. Gamalon left the two elves and entered the city, intending to search for her there. The elves agreed to meet him that night or the next morning at a famous inn in the Park District called the Gambling Ghost.
Heading back down the road, Leokas found horse tracks and evidence of a fight with gnolls a short distance off the road. Following the gnoll tracks led them to a cliff and a hidden entrance to an underground tunnel, a gnoll outpost.
Returning the next morning with the Lady Kyrin Hawkwinter and her captain of the guard, the party made an assault on the gnolls. While searching the gnoll caves, they discovered evidence suggesting that Rhinda may still be alive and that she was captured by accident. Countess Hawkwinter was the intended target.
It turns out that Rhinda had been taken to the same dungeon as Garron Ersemm. A separate party of adventurers, hired directly by King Haedrak of Tethyr, rescued her, along with Master Ersemm. While physically unharmed healthy, she has not recovered well psychologically and is currently residing in an asylum within a Temple of Torm in Myratma.
Gamalon's location still remains unknown. -

DescriptionWhen visiting el Daraqadim, the keep of the Countess of Calimmon, the party learned that the countess, Kyrin Hawkwinter was soon to be married to her farsann, Rontal Qirattar. However, they also heard rumor that her former lover and fiancé, Garron Ersemm was killed in a gnoll raid, and his body was never found. Rumors also stated that Rontal had long had his eye on the countess. Growing suspicious, a few of the adventurers have taken it upon themselves to investigate further the death of Master Ersemm.
While searching for the missing young paladin, Rhinda, the adventurers discovered a gnoll outpost between el Daraqadim and Myratma. Together with the Lady Kyrin Hawkwinter and her captain of the guard, the party made an assault on the outpost. While searching the gnoll caves, they discovered evidence suggesting that Master Ersemm may still be alive.
He was indeed alive. The evidence gathered by the party was sent by Kyrin to her superiors, who passed the information along to King Haedrak of Tethyr. The King hired a powerful group of adventurers, who were able to discern the location of Garron's imprisonment. He was rescued and secretly reunited with his former fiancée.
Kyrin staged a fake wedding in which Rontal, her farsann, was married to a doppelganger in her guise. Rontal was then exposed for his crimes and tried by the queen at that very wedding. Immediately after, Garron was revealed to be alive, and the real Kyrin and he were married by a priestess of Sune.

The party struggled to find anyone powerful enough to perform the magic; however, Jayce met a young conjuress, Oma al Catahras, who agreed to show him a secret magical basement in her innkeeper father's inherited magician's tower provided he let her adventure with them. Within that basement, after fighting an imp, they found an old scroll with the necessary magic.
The group purchased a second scroll in one of the magic bazaar's. Magically inspired by Jayce's music, Oma was able to cast the spells successfully, though of a magical power usually beyond her capabilities.
Mythlos and Rinald each returned to life confused that they were no longer in battle with a metallic bull. -

After the meeting, Grimno described the problem to them. Five days ago, there was an earthquake. The day after that, two of their miners, Jareth and Millburn, did not return at the end of the shift. When they searched for them, they found them "asleep, and blood was leaking from their bodies." They could not be woken, and they were not breathing. Grimno did not seem to have an idea of death, but the adventurers agreed to enter the mine and see what they could do in exchange for the islanders helping to repair and free The Daisy.

DescriptionAfter facing Samber in person, the adventures were transported magically from his island to some place far to the north, arriving in a land of endless snow and ice. They must survive the extreme conditions and find a way to reach civilization again.
The adventurers learned that they were on the Great Glacier, in the farthest northern reaches of Faerûn. To reach "civilization", they attempted to travel south over the Southern Shield mountain range, which was rumored to be swarming with remorhaz.
On the way, however, they were met by a cloud giantess names Skata, who asked for their help recovering a levitation runestone. Hoping that a cloud palace would speed their journey south, they agreed to help her.
They succeeded, but unfortunately, a levitation stone alone was not enough to raise the fallen cloud palace to the skies. They had no choice but to head south on foot again. Now, however, they were joined by a lost minotaur and a sun elf, named Solisar, on a quest to learn more about the schemes of the so-called Ice Queen, Iyraclea. Solisar had discovered ancient giant runes written on the wall of a crevasse in the western Lugsaas Chain and had seen one of Iyraclea's Icy Claws nearby. He needed help to investigate further. Hakam, believing that his god would somehow provide a faster route to Samber by helping Solisar, urged his companions to join the elf on his quest.
Solisar led them to the circle of runes he had discovered. The runes opened a doorway to the ruins of an ancient giant city, Gharreil. Within, they found a portal, guarded by the gelugon Tosvin. Tosvin forced them to travel through the portal to another giant ruin of Choshein and kill whomever was sending explorers through on the other side.
The explorers were Shadovar from the city of Shade, and the party eventually made an agreement with the Shadovar that they would stop investigating the portals. However, when the group returned to Chosein, they were forced to defeat another portal guardian, the Shade arcanist Uregaunt.
After defeating Uregaunt, a portal malfunction sent the group to the capital of the ancient giant empire of Jhothûn. There, the true guardian of the portals, a qorrashi, agreed to grant them freedom and three wishes if they could find the true heir of Jhothûn. -

DescriptionWhile at the Iulutiun village of Gotokok, waiting for the weapon sukkiruchit to begin, the adventurers were visited by a young cloud giantess named Skata Karisdottr. Skata claimed to have been watching the party through a scrying pool since their battle with the white dragon. She made a wager with her elder brother Bjorn that they could sneak into a frost giant lair and recover a tiny pebble covered in runes and kept in a sack from the giants' treasure room. If the adventurers are able to do this, she will try to grant them passage over the Lugsaas chain and into Damara. In any case, she will sneak them into the cloud palace magical library so that they can increase in their magical knowledge.
Skata also has a map, which she says shows human-sized tunnels through the ice, which lead to the treasure room.
After entering frost giant territory and slaying two sentries, the party located and entered the ice cavern that led to the frost giant storage room. The group was surprised to find that a den for winter wolves had been added by the giants and half of the party fended against the wolves while the others recovered the pebble successfully.
Upon returning to the palace, the cloud giants were delighted, but the adventurers were disappointed to learn that the process of levitating the palace again would still take months. Moreover, there was no way to control where a cloud palace would go. -

Upon entering the rift, the party found signs of goats and then three giant shepherds. They tried to reason with the shepherds, who considered them intruders, but when Leokas feared they would attack, he preemptively started battle with them.
